About Alfie McGinty

Alfarena (Alfie) McGinty, is the elected Coroner in Marion County bringing nearly three decades of experience in medicolegal death investigation and public service when she began her career with the office in 1997.

In her leadership role, McGinty oversees complex death investigations, agency operations, and multidisciplinary collaboration with law enforcement, public health, and medical partners. She is widely recognized for her commitment to advancing forensic practices, strengthening data-driven decision-making, and elevating the role of the coroner in public health and community engagement.

Beyond her operational leadership, McGinty serves as an adjunct faculty member at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, where she teaches death investigation, and has contributed nationally as a subject matter expert with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. Her work includes training coroners and medical examiners across the country in overdose death investigations and data interoperability.

She holds a Master of Business Administration with a specialization in healthcare management and is actively engaged in numerous professional and community organizations, including executive leadership roles in national coroner and medical examiner associations. A frequent speaker and published contributor, McGinty is passionate about innovation, education, and compassionate service to families navigating loss.

She is married with 5 children. In 2021, she lost her oldest son, James—affectionately known as Jimmy—to a fentanyl intoxication, a tragedy that shapes her unique and deeply personal insight into both the opioid epidemic and the realities of grief and loss.

Fun Fact: She owns and runs the Gobble Gobble Food Truck which has been a staple at the Indiana State Fair for 25 years with the best smoked jumbo turkey legs at the Indiana State Fair!
